Help launches emergency relief for earthquake victims in Albania

Help launches emergency relief for earthquake victims in Albania
Albania was hit early in the morning by a 6.4 magnitude earthquake. The coastal town of Durres was hit hardest. Several deaths and several hundred injuries have already been reported, buried people are being sought in collapsed houses. The full extent is still unclear. The quake itself was also felt in neighboring countries. Further aftershocks and rising numbers of victims are to be expected.
The worldwide aid organization “Help – Help zur Selbsthilfe” has been active in Southeast Europe for over 20 years and is launching its first aid measures. “The regional emergency aid fund amounting to 10,000 euros is used for the distribution of blankets and sleeping bags. We assume that many people will have to spend the next few nights outdoors. Our team Kosovo knows the region and leads the mission”, says Timo Stegelmann, Deputy Managing Director and Regional Manager Southeast Europe of Help. Help is already active in Bosnia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia in the field of livelihood support and small-scale economic aid. An extension of the successful approach to Albania is planned for 2020. A partner network is already available and in coordination with the local authorities, as well as with coordinating bodies in national level, Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe Mission in Kosovo will provide emergency assistance, however while in the field team will also see the possibilities to further assist in this event.
Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe Mission in Kosovo will accordingly coordinate its mission with the local authorities in Durres, as well as national authorities of Albania, in order not to overlap the emergency activities.
